Oral Surgery Q & A

What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery includes surgical procedures that are performed on the mouth, teeth, and gums. These surgeries may be required for complex tooth extractions, anchoring dental implants, or treating advanced stages of periodontal (gum) disease. They might be performed traditionally with scalpels and incisions closed with small stitches or with a laser that leaves no incision or sutures behind.

Laser surgery requires extensive training and specialized skill. However, it’s often a preferred surgical method at Montclair Dental Spa because, with laser surgery, there is less blood loss, less risk of postoperative infection, and less trauma to the surrounding healthy tissues.

Standard incisions and sutures aren’t required because the laser precisely excises the targeted tissue and cauterizes the surgical site immediately, which effectively eliminates bleeding. Laser surgery is especially useful for treating issues such as periodontal disease.

When do I need oral surgery?

Your dentist recommends oral surgery when necessary, to treat a wide variety of dental issues. You may require oral surgery to:

  • Anchor dental implants in your jaw
  • Rebuild bone or gum tissue lost as a result of missing teeth, decay, or periodontal disease
  • Restore receding gums to proper position
  • Repair a badly decayed tooth
  • Treat an abscess
  • Improve the fit of dentures or bridges

Oral surgery is also required for complex tooth extractions, such as removing an impacted wisdom tooth or a tooth that has broken off at the gumline and can’t be gripped with standard dental tools.

How does a wisdom tooth become impacted?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop. If your jaw has room, they may emerge at the very back of the upper and lower jaw and fall into alignment with the rest of your teeth. Most often, however, one or more of your wisdom doesn’t have enough room to emerge properly and become trapped or "impacted" between the jawbone and gum tissue.

Impacted wisdom teeth can cause swelling, pain, and infection in surrounding gum tissue and may damage nearby teeth and bone. Surgery to remove wisdom teeth is typically recommended for these reasons.
