Laser Gum Surgery: No Pain, All Gain

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 50% of Americans over age 30 have some degree of gum disease, and this number increases to more than 70% for those over 65. While catching gum disease in its earliest stages is always best, there are times when your dentist needs to surgically clear out the infected tissue to make way for healthier growth.

Traditionally, that procedure involved some cutting and a fair amount of discomfort, but the state-of-the-art laser technology of the LANAP® protocol is changing everything — making it a No Cut, No Sew, No Fear® experience.

The expert team at Montclair Dental Spa, with locations in Montclair and Englewood, NJ,  offers a wide range of services, from traditional and cosmetic dentistry to tackling sleep apnea. With the goal of providing the best experience possible, we’ve equipped ourselves with tools such as the LANAP laser system, which effectively fights off gum disease with far fewer unpleasant side effects than traditional gum surgery.

Here’s a look at how this exciting technology is taking much of the pain out of gum surgery.

Gum disease 101

Gum disease starts out innocently enough as bacteria get under your gums and create gingivitis, which is a mild inflammation along the line where your gums meet your teeth. Left unchecked, however, gingivitis can quickly turn into periodontal disease, threatening not only your gums, but your teeth and bone as well.

In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States. This occurs when the infection-causing bacteria set up shop beneath your gumline and not only wreak havoc on your gums, but also destroy anything else in their path, including your teeth and bone.

To prevent this from happening (or to put a halt to advanced gum disease), it’s imperative that we remove the plaque, tartar, and bacteria from underneath your gums, which we used to accomplish through a root planing and scaling treatment or gum flap surgery.

Now, we turn to an FDA-cleared laser treatment that promotes new alveolar bone growth, new periodontal ligament, and new cementum. What all of this means is that we can restore your mouth to a much healthier, and stronger, condition — without the need for cutting.

How LANAP works

With LANAP, we deliver a 1064 wavelength into your gums, which is absorbed by the melanin and hemoglobin in your damaged tissue, leaving your healthy tissue intact. The light from the laser penetrates your gums deep enough (4mm) to kill the harmful bacteria, while also forming a stable fibrin clot once we’re done.

Thanks to this technology, we no longer have to turn to resection to remove bacteria and damaged tissue. Instead, we can spare much of your gums.

The benefits of LANAP

The advantages of our LANAP procedure over traditional techniques are numerous and include:

With this innovative technology, we can preserve your teeth and gums while eliminating your periodontal disease, setting you up for a lifetime of great dental health.
